Introduction and Purpose
For my video project, I plan to create a 3–5 minute short documentary titled The Bains Family Immigrant Success Story. This video will build on the same themes presented in my print and audio stories — family, resilience, and community. The goal is to highlight how Satnam and Nirmal Bains, two brothers who immigrated from India in 1997, turned their first small store into a thriving business with multiple locations.
Through a combination of interviews, archival photos, and on location footage, this video will show not only the growth of their business, but also the hard work and family values that made it possible. The tone will be warm, authentic, and community focused, allowing viewers to feel connected to the story and inspired by the family’s success.
Establishing Shots
The video will begin with a wide establishing shot of walking into the store to symbolize the viewer entering the story. I’ll include additional wide shots of the store’s exterior, produce displays, and customers shopping to create a sense of space and atmosphere. These shots will set the tone and provide visual context before the interview begins.
A-Roll (Primary Interview Footage)
The main interview (A-roll) will feature Satnam Bains seated in his office or behind the store counter, speaking about his family’s journey — from immigrating to Canada, to opening their first store, to expanding into multiple locations. The camera will remain steady on a tripod in a medium-close framing to maintain focus and intimacy.
I will also capture short A-roll clips of an employee and a customer offering brief testimonials about their experiences working and shopping at the store. This will help add additional voices and perspectives to the story.
B-Roll (Supporting Visuals)
I plan to gather various B-roll clips to support and visually enhance the interview:
- Inside the store: Customers browsing, employees stocking shelves, and close-up shots of fresh produce and products.
- Archival photos: Historical images from the family’s first store, their early trucking work, and old family moments outside the shop.
- Store exterior and signage: Wide and panning shots to establish scale and identity.
- Community interaction: Customers checking out, employees assisting shoppers, and moments of conversation or laughter to show warmth and connection.
These B-roll visuals will be layered over key parts of Satnam’s narration to add movement, realism, and emotion.
Camera Angles and Composition
I will use a mix of wide, medium, and close up shots to maintain viewer engagement:
- Wide shots for context and setting (storefronts, aisles).
- Medium shots for interviews and natural conversation.
- Close-ups for emotional or detailed moments (hands, products, smiles).
All filming will be done horizontally
Chyrons
Chyrons will be added to identify speakers and locations. Examples include:
- Satnam Bains – Co-owner
- Old photo from grand opening day
- Customer name in interview
- Surrey Super Market logo
These text overlays will help the viewer and maintain clarity throughout the video.
Sound and Music
The video will include consistent background music to maintain flow and tone, using a Creative Commons track (Main Title – Inspiring Inspirational Music from Pixabay). The music will be louder during the introduction and conclusion, and softer during interviews.
I will also capture natural ambient sound inside the store, such as carts moving, customers talking, and the cash register ringing. These sounds will help create an immersive, realistic atmosphere and will be balanced carefully with dialogue.
Storytelling and Audience
The story will follow the inverted pyramid structure, beginning with who and what, then moving into details of how the business grew, the challenges they faced, and how family and community support shaped their success.
The audience for this story is the local community and anyone interested in small business, entrepreneurship, or immigrant success stories. My goal is for the video to feel genuine and inspiring — something that both informs and emotionally connects with the viewer.
Closing Sequence
The video will conclude with a reflection from Satnam about continuing to work hard and how the next generation of the family is becoming involved. I plan to fade out with a wide shot of the store and the logo appearing on screen. The background music will rise slightly in volume and fade out slowly, creating a hopeful, polished ending.
Overall Plan
This video will rely on clear visuals, natural audio, and strong storytelling to bring the Bains brothers’ journey to life. By combining interviews, photos, and real store footage, I will create an engaging narrative that ties together the themes of resilience, family, and community already established throughout my multimedia project.
